Plastics is an important part of packaging for sensitive products in order to keep them safe and fresh. Lowering that barrier protection would mean risk of increasing food waste or endangering consumers' health. In some cases packaging need to have a plastic layer to assure product quality all the way to the consumer.

Accelerating demands for sustainable products and responsible corporate behavior are reshaping the food packaging industry. Sustainability is both a challenge and an opportunity throughout the value chain. We can’t find optimal solutions in isolation. We must collaborate to develop the environmentally responsible packaging that consumers and brand owners are demanding.

One of the most effective ways to improve a package’s sustainability profile is to reduce the amount of raw materials used to construct it. EDS focusses on innovative designs and materials to achieve lightweighting and downgauging. Lightweighting is often chosen by our customers because it reduces costs and improves sustainability while maintaining performance.

On a continue basis EDS is checking packaging to keep the value and efficiency of a flexible material and at the same time be recyclable in existing recycling infrastructures.  

Flexible packaging sustainability messaging is also focusing on reducing waste in general. Newer technologies also enable downgauging and related flexible film benefits that reduce material consumption and waste. Flexible packages plays a role in reducing food waste by extending shelf life and reducing spoilage from leakers and other package breaches.
